Back to school – some useful tips

It is hard to believe that the time has come. Some are already back to school some still got to enjoy a bit more.
As we start this school year, find some useful tips that will greatly make it easier for you and reduce some apprehension and some anxious feelings.

We can’t always control those around you, but you can certainly control your own actions.
Let’s teach our children necessary steps to help prevent the spread and contraction of the novel coronavirus.


It is a new strain of virus that came into the world in late 2019 that is linked to the same family of viruses as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and a few different types of common cold. For a formal breakdown, the acronym stands for the following: (CO) Corona, (VI) Virus, (D) Disease, (19) referring to the year humans began contracting it. When compiled, COVID 19 aka CoronaVirus is what we get.

Although not everyone finds this virus to be threatening, it’s still never enjoyable to catch a cold or become ill. Stay on the lookout for the following symptoms to prevent the spread of COVID-19 to others.

✓ Fever

✓ Shortness of Breath

✓ Dry Cough

✓ Loss of ability to taste

There are, of course, other potential symptoms because every person is different and thus the virus will affect everyone differently. This is why a test is needed before one is able to confirm whether or not they have the virus.

As summer ends and schools attempt to open their doors for a normal start to the 2020 school year, it’s important to understand how this virus may affect you and how it is spread.

 COVID-19 is transmitted through direct contact with respiratory droplets from a person that is infected and is usually spread through coughing or sneezing. Another common way that COVID-19 spreads is by touching a common surface that is contaminated with the virus and then touching your face (nose, mouth, eyes, etc.) This is why it’s important to disinfect your hands and various surfaces between each person/point-of-contact.

With hundreds and potentially thousands of school-aged kids congregating in enclosed spaces, it’s important to be aware of ways to reduce the spread of this potentially deadly disease. Public health measures are important to follow in order to reduce the spread of not only this virus, but other respiratory infections like the flu or the common cold.

✓ Teach your children to cover their mouth and nose with a flexed elbow or tissue when coughing or sneezing. Dispose of used tissue immediately!
✓Washing hands often with soap and water is important!
✓ Purchase a small container or hand sanitizer for your child to carry on themselves (or in their backpack) and teach them to use it often (such as after touching a door handle or borrowing a pen from someone else)
✓ Normally we encourage the notion that sharing is caring but sharing food and drink should cease until we learn more about this virus.
✓ Remind your children to be aware of their spatial surroundings and how close they get to one another.
✓ Teach your kids to play with each other at a distance
✓ Staying home when sick or are beginning to feel any of the above symptoms listed earlier in this article
✓ Clean frequently-touched-surfaces and objects.

It’s possible to get acupuncture again ! Westchester County!


As the country moves toward reopening, reintegrating acupuncture treatments into your life will become an option again.

Just as businesses and community members are weighing their own personal choices amidst changing state guidelines, it is a personal choice whether or not you feel safe to visit an acupuncturist. As you weigh this choice, here are a few things to keep in mind.

Thanks to ASNY’s diligence (Acupuncture Society Of New York) as of May 15, 2020, Acupuncture has been listed as Essential Health Care Operations by the New York State Governor’s Executive Order 202. Offices are allowed to open as long as all applicable guidelines for safe practice are followed and have developed business safety plan. The restrictions have to be followed carefully and will be implemented to ensure the safety of the public, support tracking, tracing, and monitoring while minimizing risk of exposure. Patients are now again able to be supported for chronic pain, stress, emotional health and addiction.

What You Can Do To Help Boost Your Immune System

  • Immune boosting and herbs. Support your immune system.  Let us know you are interested in going over some herbs and nutrition.
  • Probiotics are an important part of your immune system.  They are available in fermented foods such as yogurt, kefir, raw sauerkraut, specifically labeled pickles, miso, kombucha (careful because it can contain lots of sugar and some caffeine).  Consider supplementing with a concentrated pill or powder.
  • Elderberry syrup is a go to recommendation for antiviral support.
  • Vitamin C, Vitamin D, and Zinc are also good supplements to boost your immune system.

What You Can Do To Take Care Of Yourself

  • Stress is bad for your immune system.  It’s normal to have worried thoughts. Just don’t entertain them for too long.  They will pass. Make some time to do something enjoyable each day. Connect with loved ones.
    enjoy the little magical signals that life sends you. 
  • Wash your hands frequently. Remember to avoid touching your face. Wash your masks on a daily base. I have seen cases of acne, conjunctivitis. Bacteria do spread rapidly.
  • Get enough sleep, follow the natural cycle of day and night. Turn off the screens little earlier.
  • Drink lots of water to support healthy mucous membranes as a first line of defense.  Hot water and tea have been shown to inhibit viruses in our throat.
  • Eat more nutrient dense whole foods, soups, and bone broth.
  • Eat less inflammatory foods: sugar, industrial seed oils, processed foods, alcohol, and foods you are sensitive to (wheat, dairy, eggs, nightshades etc.)
  • Support lung health by doing some even breathing, preferably outdoors in fresh air, to move circulation and clear out toxins.  Breath in through your nose for a count of 5, hold for 1 count, then out through your mouth for a count of 5, hold for 1 count. Repeat.  Make the counts even and not too long that you struggle.  Meditation: is key right now, focus on your breathing and calm down you Central Nervous System.
  • Keep moving, walking, biking and find ways to inspire yourself.
  • Get acupuncture and shiatsu!
